This is my first carving "Raven".
These pupil's are not carved. They are within the stone.....revealing themselves after final polishing..............
When creating I work blank.I do not know what I'm about to carve or draw .....I just start....
Metis Carver/artisan
I do not have any formal training. I am self taught . My venture into carving was a self experiment to seek some personal answers and test a few theories. What I found shows itself through out the collection.
I would add one book to this list "Loyal till Death" Indians and the North-West Rebellion by Blair Stonechild and Bill Waiser.
My Metis heritage comes through my mother Mae born in the Tullymet district Saskatchewen, our genealogy prepared by "La Societe historique de Saint-Boniface". My family's first presence in Canada was in Quebec city 1604. My relationship to the rebellion comes by my mother's fathers bloodline, traced back to Chief Black Powder.
tech-pen, dry pastel, charcoal.
The "eyes" windows of the soul.
My full name is William Gordon McCaveney. My father Joseph is from Motherwell, Scotland. I was named using an older Clan tradition -first born male carries the names of g.grandfather and grandfather.
When I was in my twenties my mother gave me two books to read ,"Gabrieil's Children" by Rita Schilling and "Halfbreed" by Maria Campbell. Read these and you'll know who you are, what we've been through and our role in the formation of this country.
I was born in Hamilton,Ont. October 20th 1959, Saint Joseph's Hospital, hamilton mountain.
